Xiaomi’s foray into the electric vehicle market with the SU7 represents one of the most audacious technological pivots in recent memory. However, such rapid scaling inevitably brings significant challenges, where any safety incident can instantly ignite a global firestorm of scrutiny. In this climate, the activities of a Chinese content creator named Gao evolved from routine consumer analysis into a calculated assault on the brand's reputation.
In August 2024, Gao’s team released a crash-test video designed to "expose" the SU7's alleged safety deficiencies. The footage presented a catastrophic scenario: following the collision, the doors remained locked, the central infotainment display went dark, and the emergency call system—a critical safety component of any modern EV—failed to activate. The video quickly went viral, racking up approximately 3 million views and creating a widespread perception of systemic safety flaws within Xiaomi's engineering.
However, a detailed forensic investigation eventually uncovered the technical deception behind the spectacle. It was revealed that the blogger's team had intentionally modified a fully functional vehicle prior to the test. The primary lever of manipulation was the auxiliary 12V battery. In modern electric vehicles, there is a strict architectural separation between the high-voltage traction system and the low-voltage circuit responsible for electronics, lighting, and safety systems. By damaging or intentionally disconnecting the 12V battery, the team effectively paralyzed the onboard systems, simulating a total vehicle "failure" during the crash.
The disinformation campaign was further amplified through deceptive editing: footage of a traction battery being punctured by a forklift was spliced into the narrative. This created the false impression that the battery's structural integrity had been compromised by the crash test itself, when in reality, these were two entirely different types of mechanical impact.
The resulting judicial ruling served as a stark warning to China's entire media ecosystem. In January 2025, Gao was sentenced to 20 months in prison and ordered to pay a fine of $14,800. This verdict reflects Beijing's broader strategic objective to shield national automotive champions from defamation that could inflict tangible economic damage amidst the cutthroat competition of the global EV market. The Xiaomi SU7 case demonstrates that technical expertise has become an essential filter for consuming content, and that the cost of falsifying engineering data can now be paid in real prison time.
