A Detailed Large-Scale Lego Replica of the Hubble Space Telescope

As part of its Icons line, Lego has unveiled a comprehensive tribute to one of science's most pivotal achievements: the Hubble Space Telescope (set #11382). Far more than a mere toy, this meticulously crafted replica comprises 1,252 elements. Designed for an adult audience (18+), the model will be available for purchase starting August 1, with a retail price of $140.

Measuring 32 × 38 × 38 cm, the construction's scale elevates the model's standing within the brand's portfolio. Previously, in 2021, the Hubble appeared only as a secondary accessory bundled with the Discovery shuttle. By granting the telescope its own dedicated release, Lego has allowed its designers to lean into deep detailing, capturing the true scale and engineering complexity of this cosmic instrument.

Particular attention has been paid to the internal architecture; the chassis houses recreations of the mirrors and gyroscopes—critical components that, in the actual telescope, ensure high-precision stabilization and pinpoint targeting. The model's interactivity is driven by adjustable solar panels and antennas that can shift angles, simulating the operational dynamics of the original craft in orbit. To complete the presentation, the set includes an elegant display stand and an information plaque, transforming the model into a curated museum piece.

The history of the actual Hubble is a saga of endurance and scientific triumph. Launched in April 1990, the telescope has conducted over 1.5 million observations across 36 years of service. It is thanks to Hubble that humanity obtained the first detailed images of distant galaxies, discovered new exoplanets, and determined the age of the universe with unprecedented accuracy. Although the apparatus has repeatedly stood on the verge of decommissioning and currently operates in a limited capacity due to the gradual wear of its gyroscopes, it remains a cornerstone of cosmic exploration.
This release aligns with Lego's broader strategic pivot toward expanding its space-themed offerings. The brand's commitment to the intersection of scientific education and gamification is further evidenced by other recent innovations, including an unconventional, fully functional space-themed pinball machine, signaling a clear interest in creating complex, conceptual objects for adult enthusiasts.
