Global healthcare metrics reveal a sobering reality: according to the World Health Organization, approximately 1.5 billion people currently suffer from some degree of hearing loss—a figure projected to climb to 2.5 billion by 2050. Yet, only a fraction of those in need have access to specialized hearing aids. The barriers are not merely economic; the prohibitive cost of professional equipment is compounded by social stigmas and a chronic shortage of qualified medical care across numerous regions.
In this context, pivoting a mass-market consumer product into a clinical tool is more than a strategic marketing move; it is a direct response to a systemic crisis in healthcare accessibility. By leveraging microphone arrays and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms—technologies already embedded in modern TWS earbuds—manufacturers can deliver sound amplification capabilities comparable to entry-level medical devices.
The FDA has officially cleared this technology for use within the Samsung ecosystem, paving the way for the widespread deployment of "Hearing Aid" functionality. This feature is slated for release in the fourth quarter of this year via a software update. On the hardware front, support will be limited to the Galaxy Buds3 Pro and Galaxy Buds4 Pro, as these models possess the requisite computational overhead and microphone fidelity necessary for precise audio stream processing.
Central to this system is the integrated Hearing Test tool. It enables users to undergo a primary diagnostic assessment of their auditory acuity without visiting a clinic—a critical advantage for those in remote areas or individuals deterred by the psychological friction of clinical visits. Based on these results, the system automatically calibrates a personalized amplification profile tailored to the user's specific physiological needs.
The technical implementation relies on deep integration with the software stack: functionality requires One UI version 8 or higher and the Samsung Health app, effectively transforming the earbuds into a component of a unified biometric health-monitoring loop. In terms of performance, the device can efficiently boost high frequencies and isolate whispers or distant voices, while simultaneously utilizing Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and directional isolation to filter out ambient noise.
This milestone was not achieved overnight. Development began in 2020 in close collaboration with specialized laboratories, and clinical trials concluded successfully in 2021, validating the chosen approach. Consequently, the process of configuring a full-fledged hearing aid mode has been reduced to under five minutes, making the technology highly accessible and intuitive for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss.
