Precision Silicon Polishing: The Chinese Approach

At the core of every semiconductor device lies the silicon wafer, which must undergo a process of precision polishing before circuitry can be etched. In the industry, this is known as CMP (Chemical Mechanical Planarization)—a sophisticated synergy of chemical etching and mechanical abrasion designed to achieve an atomically flat surface. At this scale, any deviation at the nanometer level can result in the failure of an entire batch of chips, making quality control at this stage a critical driver of a fabrication plant's economic viability.
Hwatsing Technology, a Chinese firm, has introduced a solution that shifts the processing paradigm: the integration of a real-time feedback loop with metrology equipment directly into the polishing process. Previously, quality measurements were often conducted post-process, leading to significant time lags and the risk of overlooked defects. By implementing real-time monitoring, parameters can be adjusted instantaneously, substantially increasing wafer yield and accelerating the overall production cycle.
Despite this technological leap, the current implementation has clear operational boundaries. The equipment is optimized for 150mm wafers—a specification that falls within the "mature" lithography segment of modern microelectronics. Consequently, this technology is not intended for the production of cutting-edge processors on 3nm or 5nm nodes, which require larger wafer diameters and far more stringent precision standards. However, for a vast swath of the industry, these specifications are more than sufficient.
The demand for such solutions is driven by the growth of power electronics and sensor markets. Components produced on 150mm wafers serve as the backbone for the automotive industry (particularly electric vehicles), robotics, consumer electronics, and telecommunications infrastructure. This is where the bulk of industrial production is concentrated—a sector where reliability and cost-efficiency take precedence over extreme transistor density.
Economic indicators reveal a rapid expansion of Chinese players in this segment. In 2018, Hwatsing's global market share was negligible, hovering below 1%. Today, the company claims 37% of the global market and dominates its domestic landscape with an approximate 85% share. Overall, Chinese suppliers now command nearly 40% of the domestic polishing equipment market, signaling a deep localization of critical supply chains.
Nevertheless, the broader picture of semiconductor sovereignty remains fragmented. While success is evident in surface preparation and auxiliary equipment, the lithography segment remains an "impregnable fortress." Despite rising revenues for local metrology system manufacturers, their share of the lithography equipment market remains low—under 10%. In this arena, the Netherlands-based ASML continues to be the unrivaled leader, and the technological chasm between Chinese developers and the global gold standard remains most pronounced here.
