Anthropic’s Strategic Push for Hardware Independence
Xiaomi's AI Investment Horizon

Xiaomi's current strategic trajectory is defined by a profound synergy between the advancement of artificial intelligence and its aggressive expansion into the electric vehicle (EV) segment. In the company's financial reporting, these two verticals are consolidated into a single business unit, underscoring their fundamental interdependence: autonomous transport and intelligent management systems are untenable without a powerful cognitive core. Despite prevailing market pressures, leadership has adopted a calculated, patient approach toward AI monetization, acknowledging that the technology is still in its nascent stages and requires massive, foundational investment.
Recent financial performance reflects the gravity of this pivot. Net profit has trended downward, contracting by 20.3% at the close of the second quarter. However, this decline is the result of a deliberate reallocation of resources: Xiaomi is transitioning from a model of rapid profitability to one of long-term technological leadership.
In the first half of the year, research and development expenditures surged by 25.6%, reaching a substantial $2.7 billion. Notably, nearly one-third of this investment—approximately 30%—was channeled directly into AI development. Such a concentration of capital signals a clear intent to build a proprietary, end-to-end technology stack that will serve as a competitive moat across all product lines.
The path toward technological sovereignty is complicated by external headwinds. Rising costs for memory components and intensifying competition are exerting short-term pressure on business operations. This volatility has impacted legacy revenue streams: smartphone sales declined by 7.5% to $6.2 billion, while the home appliances and Internet of Things (IoT) segment saw an even more pronounced dip of 19.2%, falling to $4.65 billion.
Nevertheless, management views these fluctuations as transitory. The strategic North Star remains unchanged: the creation of an intelligent ecosystem where AI is not treated as a standalone paid service, but as an intrinsic element of the user experience. Xiaomi is betting that deep technical rigor today will secure market dominance tomorrow, once the industry moves past its primary accumulation phase and enters the era of mass adoption for complex intelligent systems.
