TSMC’s Global Growth Strategy in the Age of AI

TSMC’s financial performance has become the definitive barometer for the broader technology sector. The latest quarterly reports signal a bold optimism: revenue growth forecasts for the current year have been revised upward, now projected between 30% and 40%. Simultaneously, the company is significantly raising its capital expenditure ceiling, expanding the range to $64 billion. These massive investments are driven by the urgent need to scale capacity to support AI infrastructure and 5G networks.
Current quarterly revenue projections, estimated between $44.6 billion and $45.8 billion, underscore a resilient demand for cutting-edge silicon. Yet, beneath this surface success lie the frictions of technological transition. Profit margins have seen a slight contraction, settling between 65% and 67%. In the semiconductor industry, such volatility typically accompanies the rollout of new process nodes. Here, the driver is the expansion of 2nm technology—a phase characterized by colossal upfront costs in equipment and process optimization before achieving commercial viability at scale.
The company’s geographic strategy is undergoing an equally radical transformation. TSMC plans to significantly broaden its US footprint, adding four new fabs to the six already slated for construction. This expansion will require an additional $100 billion in investment beyond the previously announced $165 billion. This is not merely a quantitative increase in capacity but a qualitative migration of core competencies; the US sites are intended to master 2nm production and even more advanced standards.
Such expansion faces formidable internal and external headwinds. On one hand, Taiwanese legislation restricts the simultaneous deployment of the most advanced technologies outside the island to preserve national competitive advantage. On the other, the economic imperative is undeniable: approximately 78% of TSMC’s revenue is generated in North America. Establishing a comprehensive cluster in Arizona—encompassing not only lithography but also specialized packaging and testing facilities—allows the company to mitigate logistical risks and insulate itself from geopolitical turbulence.
In the long term, TSMC is betting on a fundamental paradigm shift in compute architecture. Management’s outlook is clear: demand for specialized AI infrastructure components will remain elevated until at least 2030. This transforms current multi-billion dollar outlays from mere operating expenses into the strategic bedrock for market dominance over the next decade.
