AMD’s Strategic Approach to the Budget Segment
TSMC’s Dominance in the Race Toward 1.4nm

Taichung is emerging as the epicenter of a new technological expansion. It is here that TSMC is deploying a massive infrastructure project designed to serve as the foundation for next-generation chip production. The company's ambitions for the 1.4nm process node have proven more aggressive than previously anticipated: volume production is now slated for the second half of 2027, accelerating the original timeline by a full year.
The execution of this strategy relies on the phased commissioning of four specialized fabrication plants. The first site, designated as P1, is already under active construction and is expected to deliver initial engineering samples by April 2027. Simultaneously, the foundation for the P2 facility is being laid, with completion anticipated by October of the same year.
Further capacity expansion involves the launch of P3 and P4. TSMC has already secured the necessary permits for P3, while approvals for P4 are in the final stages. According to the roadmap, the entire Taichung complex will be fully operational by the end of 2028. P3 is expected to be ready by the second quarter, with P4 completing its construction cycle in the fourth quarter of 2028. From an economic perspective, this concentration of capacity transforms the tech park into a formidable profit engine, with potential annual revenues of at least $16 billion.
TSMC's efficiency is driven not only by engineering prowess but also by Taiwan's unique ecosystem. The high density of suppliers and partners in immediate proximity to the production lines minimizes logistical overhead and drastically accelerates iteration cycles during chip development. This creates a synergy that is exceptionally difficult to replicate in any other region of the world.
Furthermore, TSMC is looking to transcend the boundaries of traditional microelectronics. Reports suggest the company is considering the acquisition of AUO plants located near the Fab 15 facility. This strategy aims to integrate optoelectronic components directly into the mass production process. The transition to silicon photonics will enable a radical increase in data throughput and a reduction in power consumption—factors that are critical for the evolution of artificial intelligence systems.
Against this backdrop, the positions of its primary competitors appear increasingly precarious. Intel and Samsung Electronics plan to launch their 1.4nm lines only in 2028 and 2029, respectively. Should TSMC maintain its current trajectory, the gap in technological parity will become critical, leaving its rivals playing catch-up in the most pivotal race of the modern high-tech industry.
