China’s robotics industry has reached a pivotal institutional milestone: Unitree is finalizing its preparations for an IPO on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. This move sets a significant precedent, as Unitree becomes the first domestic robotics manufacturer to list on mainland China's equity market. The financial scale of the deal underscores the sector's immense ambitions: with a valuation of 61 billion yuan (approximately $9.04 billion) and an offering price of 150.8 yuan ($22.34) per share, Unitree aims to raise 6.1 billion yuan ($904 million).
Yet, beyond the balance sheet lies a far more profound technological strategy. As part of the IPO, Unitree has forged a strategic partnership with DeepSeek, one of the most efficient developers of artificial intelligence systems. While DeepSeek’s investment of 140.8 million yuan ($20.8 million) secures them a 2.31% stake in the company, the true value of the deal lies in the creation of a closed-loop ecosystem for data and technology exchange.
The two entities have established a framework of mutual priority: Unitree will leverage DeepSeek’s solutions to train its models, while DeepSeek gains access to Unitree’s hardware infrastructure to advance research in "Embodied AI." This field seeks to solve a fundamental challenge in modern robotics—the creation of a comprehensive "brain" capable of navigating chaotic, unfamiliar environments and flawlessly translating abstract human commands into precise physical actions.
Currently, the market is saturated with relatively affordable humanoid machines that showcase impressive walking or dancing capabilities but remain largely impractical for real-world autonomous labor. Transitioning to genuine functionality requires models trained on massive datasets of physical interaction. At present, this process remains grueling: in specialized data collection centers, human operators manually guide robots through basic operations, such as opening doors or folding laundry.
For DeepSeek, this alliance is key to overcoming its own technological bottlenecks. Despite stellar achievements in logic, mathematics, and programming, the company’s core strength remains rooted in text-based models. Multimodal capabilities—the ability of an AI to simultaneously process visual and linguistic information—remain a primary area for growth. Although DeepSeek has developed the VL2 research system, it has yet to be integrated into its flagship commercial products.
Previous attempts by the company to publicly showcase advancements in AI visual reasoning ended abruptly, with papers and GitHub repositories withdrawn without explanation. The partnership with Unitree allows DeepSeek to transition its theoretical research into the realm of physical experimentation. Ultimately, merging the computational power of neural networks with the precision of robotic hardware is expected to accelerate the emergence of machines capable of autonomous spatial cognition.
