In the contemporary mobile ecosystem, owning multiple devices from a single brand often entails a certain level of friction when managing connectivity. The traditional act of swapping a SIM card from one slot to another is an archaic and cumbersome process. Apple aims to resolve this with "Companion eSIM," a technology slated for integration into future system updates (specifically mentioned for iOS 27). This initiative elevates subscriber identity management, allowing a single phone number to be shared across multiple iPhones linked to a single Apple ID.
At the heart of this solution lies the iPhone Handoff feature. While traditional Handoff allows for the instantaneous transfer of an open document or browser tab between devices, this new evolution extends that functionality to cellular connectivity. Technically, this means the phone number is no longer "tethered" to a specific chip; instead, it becomes a dynamic attribute of the user's account.
The activation process is designed to be seamless. Users configure the feature on the primary device where the number is already registered. A critical technical constraint is the requirement for eSIM; physical SIM cards will likely be excluded from this ecosystem, as they lack the necessary flexibility for remote provisioning. On a second iPhone linked to the same account, the system will prompt the user to configure connectivity during the initial setup phase.
The switching mechanism is triggered by owner verification. To migrate the active number to another device, the user simply double-clicks the side button on the original iPhone. This triggers an instantaneous transfer of ownership via Companion eSIM; the newly selected smartphone becomes the primary communication hub, while the previous device enters standby mode.
It is worth noting that the implementation of this feature depends entirely on carrier infrastructure. Full functionality requires specific server-side capabilities from the provider. Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile are expected to be among the first to implement support, although the necessary servers have not yet been activated.
A critical distinction must be made between iPhone Handoff and traditional MultiSIM services. While MultiSIM allows multiple devices to be active simultaneously by mirroring the signal, Apple’s approach favors sequential usage. The number is not cloned; it is migrated. This prevents call conflicts and ensures a more streamlined identity management architecture within the digital space.
