iPhone 17: Dominating the Global Market
Nvidia Asserts Control Over Open-Source AI

The artificial intelligence industry is undergoing a period of tectonic shifts, where asset valuation is driven less by current revenue and more by strategic leverage over the future of the sector. Reports of Nvidia’s acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.9 billion underscore this trend. While official confirmation of the deal remains pending, the sheer scale of the operation signals Nvidia's intent to secure a central position within the open AI infrastructure.
Hugging Face has long since evolved beyond a simple repository. Today, it serves as the "GitHub of neural networks"—a critical nexus where developers worldwide exchange models, datasets, and the tools necessary to adapt algorithms for specific hardware. Gaining control over this platform means controlling how millions of engineers interact with AI at its most fundamental level.
For Nvidia, this move is dictated by stark market necessity. A dangerous trend is emerging within the proprietary model segment: giants like OpenAI and Anthropic are striving for total autonomy. By developing their own accelerators, they aim to reduce their dependence on costly GPUs and dictate their own terms. In this context, open-source models become Nvidia's primary allies. Unlike corporations with their own proprietary silicon, users of open-source solutions rely entirely on external compute resources—the vast majority of which are powered by Nvidia architecture. By supporting and expanding the open AI ecosystem, Nvidia is effectively guaranteeing long-term demand for its hardware.
From a traditional business perspective, the financial architecture of the deal appears paradoxical. As recently as 2023, Hugging Face was valued at $4.5 billion; furthermore, Nvidia's previous attempt to invest $500 million at a $7 billion valuation was rejected by leadership seeking to avoid the dominance of a single player. Now, the price has nearly tripled, despite the service generating annual revenues of approximately $150 million. A valuation representing 80 times annual revenue indicates that Nvidia is not purchasing a cash flow, but rather a strategic asset and a powerful lever of influence.
Beyond community influence, the deal provides Nvidia with a path to reclaim ground in the cloud computing market. Previous expansion attempts via the DGX Cloud service did not achieve the expected triumph, yet Hugging Face already possesses a functioning infrastructure for model deployment. This allows Nvidia to efficiently utilize cloud resources—which the company has committed to purchasing under customer support agreements—creating a vertically integrated loop: from chip production to the environment where the model is executed.
This acquisition is part of a broader, aggressive investment strategy. Nvidia is allocating billions of dollars to support developers, data center operators, and services like Perplexity, with an additional $18 billion earmarked for equity investments over the next two fiscal years.
The company's projected revenue growth of 70% next year confirms that Nvidia's leadership views this expansionist approach as the only way to maintain its hegemony. By merging hardware superiority with control over the primary distributor of open models, Nvidia is transforming from a mere component supplier into the primary architect of the modern AI industry.
