The friction between Apple and OpenAI has escalated beyond mere market rivalry, evolving into a full-scale legal war. At the heart of the dispute are allegations of trade secret theft and breaches of contractual obligations. Cupertino contends that OpenAI deliberately orchestrated a strategy to poach key specialists specifically to gain access to Apple’s proprietary developments. In response, the creators of ChatGPT have remained succinct, denying any evidence of wrongdoing while appealing to the principles of fair competition and professional mobility.
Central to the case is Tang Tan, OpenAI’s Director of Hardware and a former Apple employee who played a pivotal role in the creation of the iPhone and Apple Watch. According to the plaintiff, Tan spearheaded coordinated efforts to exfiltrate intellectual property. The situation is further complicated by technical specifics: investigators point to the case of engineer Chan Liu, who, upon moving to the competitor, managed to download a massive volume of confidential files from Apple’s internal network storage.
Technical analysis of the incident revealed the exploitation of a "zero-day" vulnerability—a rare authentication flaw that allowed attackers to bypass security systems and penetrate the corporate network. The fact that this exploit was deployed before security teams could detect or patch it elevates the case from a simple breach of corporate ethics to a matter of targeted cyber espionage.
Parallel to these legal battles, a war for "intellectual capital" is unfolding. The scale of the talent migration is staggering: OpenAI has attracted over 400 former Apple employees, including industry heavyweights such as Evans Hankey, head of industrial design, and Paul Mead, a lead on the Vision Pro project. A cornerstone of this ecosystem is the collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive via his startup, io, which was acquired by OpenAI for $6.5 billion. The objective of this alliance is to create an innovative AI companion—a screenless smart speaker designed to fundamentally reimagine human-machine interaction.
Apple, for its part, is countering this challenge by developing its own line of home devices featuring deep AI integration. The centerpiece of this strategy is a smart home control hub codenamed J490. Featuring a 7-inch display and a bespoke operating system, the device is intended to be the physical embodiment of an overhauled Siri, integrated into the upcoming iOS 27.
Apple’s ambitions extend beyond stationary hubs. In development is an advanced version of the device where the screen is mounted on a robotic manipulator, allowing the gadget to physically shift its position and rotate toward the user based on the context of the command. Combined with new smart-home security systems, Apple aims to build a closed, controlled ecosystem capable of resisting OpenAI’s expansion into the consumer segment.
