Fleet statistics in Texas reveal a troubling trend. In Austin, the number of active vehicles dropped from approximately 25 in April to 17 by June. Even accounting for a modest presence in Dallas, the total fleet across the state barely reaches twenty units. While this sluggish scaling is framed as a commitment to safety, external data suggests deeper systemic issues: the frequency of incidents and "near-misses" in Austin significantly exceeds industry averages.

Against the backdrop of these tentative steps, Waymo’s dominance becomes starkly apparent. While Tesla manages a boutique group of loyalists, Waymo has deployed a full-scale commercial network of 3,000 autonomous vehicles across several US metropolises, facilitating over 500,000 paid trips per week. The gulf between an "experimental invite-only service" and a "scalable business" has become critical.

In the current climate, the expansion into Florida looks less like a leap forward and more like a face-saving exercise in the face of fierce competition. As Tesla continues to iterate its software, the company is forced to balance its promises of a "mobility revolution" against the harsh realities of road safety, where every additional kilometer of autonomous mileage demands extreme caution.
