This implies that while physical media will persist in the market for a few more years, the focus will be on sustaining the existing catalog rather than fostering new physical traditions.
This move is driven by more than just a desire for logistical optimization; it is part of a profound industrial restructuring. Sony has already invested millions of dollars in upgrading its manufacturing capabilities: a facility previously dedicated to optical disc pressing is being transformed into a microlens production plant. This technological pivot underscores that the abandonment of physical media is not a temporary measure, but a definitive exit from a segment that is no longer economically viable.
As an alternative for retailers, the company has proposed selling digital codes housed in physical packaging. While this practice is not new to the industry, it fails to address the fundamental concern of the consumer: the erosion of actual ownership. Instead of a tangible asset that can be resold, gifted, or archived independently of server uptime, gamers are left with nothing more than a temporary license to access content.
Such a transformation will inevitably reshape the economics of the secondary gaming market. The disappearance of discs effectively dismantles the used-game segment—a move that heavily favors rights holders by forcing every new player to purchase the product at full price through official digital storefronts. Consequently, Sony is doing more than just updating its distribution stack; it is engineering a tightly controlled ecosystem where the pipeline from developer to consumer is stripped of intermediaries and alternative exchange channels.
