Sky Nomad N90: A New Philosophy of Space

The genesis of Xiaomi's full-size SUV was a protracted journey, marked by rigorous prototype testing and iterative refinement. Initially developed under the internal codename YU9, the project underwent a strategic pivot prior to its market debut: the company decided to carve out a dedicated brand for the model—Sky Nomad. The name, evoking the spirit of a "celestial wanderer," precisely defines the vehicle's positioning: a machine engineered for those who prize mobility and are prepared for extended expeditions far beyond the reach of urban infrastructure.
Unlike Xiaomi's previous ventures, which were "pure-bred" electric vehicles, the Sky Nomad N90 utilizes a hybrid powertrain. For a vehicle of this mass and scale, the choice was driven by engineering pragmatism. Integrating an internal combustion engine with electric motors solves two critical challenges simultaneously: it significantly reduces the weight and cost of the traction battery while maintaining the impressive range and instantaneous dynamics characteristic of EVs.

While the SU7 sedan and YU7 crossover were positioned as sleek, high-performance instruments, the Sky Nomad N90 operates in an entirely different arena. Xiaomi defines it as an "SUV with intelligent space-expansion capabilities." This concept centers on a profound transformation of the interior, turning the cabin into an adaptive environment. The manufacturer's released schematics—resembling detailed architectural blueprints—showcase an extraordinary level of layout flexibility.
The N90's interior can be reconfigured to accommodate anywhere from one to seven passengers. Ergonomics are paramount: the rear seats fold into a nearly seamless flat surface, creating a full-scale lounge area. Among the most innovative additions are swiveling front seats and a sliding center console, allowing the space to be optimized based on the immediate task. For outdoor enthusiasts, the vehicle offers not only optional tents but also high-capacity power interfaces, effectively transforming the car into a mobile power station for external equipment.

The technical specifications of the Sky Nomad N90 solidify its status as a flagship. With an overall length of 5.3 meters and a wheelbase of 3.1 meters, the vehicle boasts a commanding internal volume. At the heart of the hybrid system is a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with dual traction motors, one on each axle. Notably, Xiaomi develops and manufactures the electric motors in-house, while the battery chemistry and assembly are handled by industry titans CALB and Sunwoda.
The onboard battery capacity exceeds 70 kWh, delivering a substantial pure-electric range of 400 to 500 km according to the CLTC cycle. In hybrid mode, the vehicle's total autonomy reaches 1,500 km, effectively eliminating "range anxiety" during long-distance intercity travel.

The vehicle's tech stack is further augmented by state-of-the-art driver assistance systems. The presence of a LiDAR sensor on the leading edge of the roof indicates that the Sky Nomad N90 will feature an advanced suite for autonomous driving and active safety.
The market entry is expected to trigger an aggressive price war. To effectively challenge the dominance of giants like Li Auto and Aito—who currently occupy the majority of the top 10 most popular full-size crossovers in China—Xiaomi will likely set a starting price below $30,000. Such a move would allow the company to rapidly capture market share by offering premium comfort and cutting-edge technology at a highly competitive price point.
