Qualcomm’s New Pricing Strategy
Memory Shortages Reshape the Economics of the Pixel Series

The mobile device industry is grappling with a severe component supply crisis that has effectively upended traditional pricing models. The situation is exacerbated by an anomalous surge in memory chip costs; according to data from Morgan Stanley, the price per gigabyte of RAM is projected to skyrocket from $2.80 in 2025 to $12 by 2026. Such a sixfold increase in expenditures makes it impossible to maintain previous retail price points without suffering a catastrophic erosion of profit margins.
For years, Google sought to insulate the end consumer from fluctuations in component costs, essentially absorbing the price differential through its own resources. However, a fundamental shift in supply chain economics has rendered this strategy unsustainable. Consequently, the entire Pixel lineup will undergo "dynamic pricing adjustments" dictated by current market conditions. It is expected that the base models of the Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro will see price increases of approximately $100.
This financial volatility has also necessitated technical concessions. Reports suggest that the RAM capacity in the base Pixel 11 may be scaled back from 16GB to 12GB. To mitigate the potential backlash, Google plans to increase internal storage to 256GB, partially offsetting the device's higher cost. Meanwhile, premium versions—such as the Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold—are forecasted for price hikes without any corresponding increase in storage capacity.
The memory shortage is not limited to upcoming releases; existing and soon-to-be-launched models are equally vulnerable. It is highly probable that price corrections will extend to the "a" series, specifically the Pixel 10a, which was intended to serve as an affordable entry point into the Google ecosystem throughout its lifecycle.
In an attempt to offset these hardware limitations, Google is pivoting toward software optimization. The company's engineering teams are working on a comprehensive overhaul of memory management protocols within Android and its accompanying app ecosystem. The objective is to reduce RAM requirements without compromising performance or UI fluidity. In essence, Google is attempting to solve an economic crisis through software engineering, striving to maintain device competitiveness even as physical memory capacity shrinks.
