Intel’s Return to the Era of High-Performance Computing

Intel's latest financial results reveal a trajectory the company hasn't experienced since 2011. Quarterly revenue surged by 25% to $16.1 billion, significantly outpacing market expectations. The primary catalyst for this growth was the server segment, which saw an impressive 59% jump. Despite this momentum, the revenue mix remains varied: the client group continues to lead in earnings, generating $8.9 billion compared to $6.26 billion from the server sector. Notably, growth in the consumer segment was driven more by an increase in Average Selling Price (ASP) than by shipment volumes, which have actually declined.
The Intel Foundry division warrants particular scrutiny. While its revenue grew 30.5% to $5.8 billion, this growth is offset by substantial operating losses of $2.1 billion. This financial profile is expected; the company is in a phase of aggressive capacity re-tooling as it pivots from a closed manufacturing model toward an open foundry service. This investment cycle demands massive capital, prompting leadership to revise CapEx upward from $18 billion to at least $20 billion, with further increases projected for next year.
Operational efficiency is also trending upward. Gross margins reached 40.4%, a 13-percentage-point increase over the previous year. While these figures remain far from the company's historical peaks—which once exceeded 60%—the current trajectory suggests that operational optimization measures are paying off. Margins are expected to climb further to 42% in the coming quarter.
Intel’s strategic compass is now firmly set on AI infrastructure. The company is seeing rising demand not only for traditional CPUs but also for ASIC solutions and advanced packaging technologies. To stabilize future revenue streams, Intel is shifting toward a long-term planning model, having already secured ten contracts with server clients spanning three to five years. Some of these agreements lock in both volumes and pricing, providing a critical financial buffer against market volatility.
The company's technological stack is currently hitting a critical inflection point. High hopes are pinned on the Intel 14A process node. While management previously expressed skepticism regarding its rollout, customer adoption rates are now ahead of schedule. Mass production for 14A is slated for 2028, with pilot production beginning in the first half of next year. Simultaneously, progress continues across the Intel 7, Intel 3, and Intel 18A nodes, including the launch of 18A-P engineering samples.
Despite optimistic revenue forecasts for the next quarter (ranging from $15.8 billion to $16.8 billion), the second-period financial statements reflect a loss of $11 billion. However, this figure is largely technical, stemming from the accounting implications of a deal with the U.S. government involving equity transfers. To sustain operations, Intel maintains a robust liquidity position: $30 billion in cash and a $10 billion credit line.
In the current market climate, Intel is betting on the synergy between high-performance CPUs and GPUs, positing that AI infrastructure will drive long-term CPU demand. Consequently, the company is deliberately prioritizing server solutions, even if it temporarily stunts growth in the client segment due to memory shortages and the reallocation of manufacturing resources.
