Geespace’s Orbital Expansion into the IoT Sector

Geely Holding Group’s strategic trajectory has long extended beyond the boundaries of traditional automotive manufacturing. As early as 2018, the company laid the groundwork for Geespace—an ambitious project to deploy a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. The primary objective of this initiative is to establish a data transmission infrastructure with minimal operational expenditures, a critical prerequisite for the mass adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.
A recent decision by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to grant Geespace a two-year testing permit for its communication system marks a watershed moment for the region. For the first time in the history of the Chinese market, a private entity has been granted such access to orbital resources. Previously, these privileges were reserved exclusively for state-owned enterprises or entities with direct government backing, such as Beijing Guodian High-Tech Technology, supported by the industry giant China Mobile. This shift signals a clear liberalization of the approach to developing domestic space infrastructure.
The technological philosophy behind Geespace differs fundamentally from the approach implemented by Starlink. While Elon Musk’s venture focuses on delivering high bandwidth to the end-user, the Chinese system is optimized for energy efficiency and maximum territorial coverage. In the context of IoT, the priority is not the transmission of data-intensive content, but rather the stability of connectivity for billions of sensors and terminals installed across all modes of transport—from autonomous vehicles to ocean liners and railway systems.
The scale of deployment is impressive: between 2022 and 2025, Geespace successfully launched 64 satellites across six missions, completing the first phase of its network formation. However, this is merely the beginning. The ultimate goal is a constellation of over 5,600 satellites. Such density of coverage will create a global information layer, which is already gaining traction in more than 20 countries across Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.
The economic potential of this venture is underscored by data from the analytical agency ABI Research. The satellite IoT market is demonstrating steady growth: while the number of active devices reached 13.6 million last year, this figure is projected to more than double to 28.6 million by 2030. The financial impact of this growth is estimated at $3.1 billion in revenue.
Consequently, Geespace is not merely building a communication system; it is defining a new standard for industrial connectivity. In an era where autonomous transport and remote resource monitoring are becoming the norm, owning a proprietary satellite network is evolving from a technological advantage into a fundamental prerequisite for survival in the global market.
