However, the weakest link in any security architecture remains the human factor—a reality that proved fatal for one of the company's senior engineers.
The case centers on an employee within the advanced process development division who, since 2022, had deep access to critical documentation. According to investigators, the motive for the espionage was the pursuit of a more lucrative career opportunity. As early as last year, the engineer entered negotiations with a Chinese recruitment agency, effectively preparing for a transition to a competitor in the PRC.
The exfiltration strategy was timed for a narrow window of opportunity: after submitting a resignation in February, the specialist remained on staff until mid-April. This "liminal" period provided the ideal opening for data theft. Throughout March and April, the engineer visited Nanya's secure laboratories on weekends and during off-hours, betting on a lapse in security vigilance.
To circumvent physical security, the suspect employed a rudimentary yet effective ruse: an Insta360 X4 Air camera was concealed inside an ordinary bag of snacks. Leveraging his legitimate access rights, the suspect opened confidential files on the corporate network and simply photographed the monitor screens. By doing so, he bypassed file-download logging systems, creating visual copies of 32 key documents.
Yet, the perceived ingenuity of the method was undone by a single, critical oversight. The engineer forgot to disable the camera's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transmitters. In modern security centers, restricted access entails more than just CCTV and badge checks; it involves constant radio frequency (RF) monitoring. Security specialists detected an unauthorized signal source in a zone where all wireless devices are strictly prohibited.
Analysis of the RF logs enabled investigators to reconstruct the timeline of visits and correlate them with the engineer's presence in the laboratories. What appeared to be an invisible intrusion left a distinct digital footprint in the airwaves.
The suspect is currently under investigation and faces up to ten years of imprisonment. Despite the severity of the charges, investigators have yet to find evidence that the stolen data was actually transmitted to the Chinese side. Nevertheless, this case underscores a new reality in corporate security: in a world where every device strives to be "smart" and connected, a radio wave becomes as definitive a witness as a surveillance camera.
